Preventive roof maintenance
Routine attention is most useful when it follows the roof’s actual weak points.

Build a roof-specific routine
Tree cover, roof pitch, material and exposure influence what needs checking. Valleys may collect leaves; low-slope outlets can clog; exposed edges can loosen. A baseline inspection helps set the priorities. Maintenance programs should identify the areas to review and the circumstances that trigger another visit, rather than promising a universal interval.
Correct small defects deliberately
Maintenance can include clearing accessible debris, checking outlets and identifying deteriorated seals or displaced materials. It does not mean applying caulk everywhere. Flashing defects and drainage problems often need a specific repair. Material-specific care is especially important for cedar roofs.
Be realistic about restoration
Restoration may be appropriate when the existing roof is sufficiently sound and compatible with the proposed treatment. It is not a substitute for replacing decayed decking or addressing wet insulation. Compare restoration with targeted repairs and replacement, using the condition of the entire assembly rather than the appearance of its surface.
