Roof decking & underlayment
The layers you do not see determine how securely the visible roof can be installed.

01 / Considerations
A sound surface for attachment
Soft, delaminated or moisture-damaged sheathing can compromise attachment and should not be covered without evaluation. Existing boards may also need review for spacing and condition. During roof replacement, newly exposed defects should be documented so repair decisions are based on what is actually uncovered.
02 / Considerations
Underlayment is part of a system
Underlayment provides an additional layer beneath the primary covering, with products and placement selected for slope, material and exposure. It does not replace sound roofing or correct flashing. Metal roofs, asphalt shingles and other coverings can have different requirements; compatibility and manufacturer instructions matter.
03 / Considerations
Resolve the source of deterioration
Recurring wet decking may reflect rain entry, attic moisture or both. Pair repairs with investigation of water entry and attic conditions. Structural framing damage is a separate question from replacing sheathing and may need additional evaluation before a new covering is installed.
