Porch, garage & outbuilding roofs

A smaller roof still needs a complete plan—especially where it connects to the house.

Porches and dormers create junctions

A porch roof often meets a wall below another roof, while a dormer interrupts the main slope. These connections need careful roof-to-wall flashing and runoff management. A lower pitch may require low-slope materials even when the main house uses shingles.

Treat detached structures on their own merits

Garage roof replacement and shed roofing should reflect deck condition, ventilation, stored contents and exposure. A small footprint does not make deteriorated sheathing safe to cover. Inspect the substrate and roof edges before deciding whether a simple repair or complete replacement makes more sense.

Coordinate without forcing a match

Matching the main house can create a coherent appearance, but the chosen material must still suit the outbuilding's structure and slope. Compare shingles and metal roofing on those grounds. Discuss access, nearby planting and the protection of stored items before work starts.
